AMES, Iowa – Iowa State infielder Sami Williams is a finalist for the 2017 Schutt Sports/NFCA Division I National Freshman of the Year. Williams was among 25 finalists announced by the NFCA for the honor, given annually to the nation's most outstanding freshman.
Williams is currently putting together an historic rookie campaign for the Cyclones. The native of Laguna Niguel, Calif., has started every game at second base while producing outstanding results, particularly in Big 12 play. Against conference foes, Williams leads the team in batting average (.378), hits (14), RBIs (8), doubles (5) and home runs (3). Williams' slugging percentage in conference play is .757, the third best mark among all league batters. She also leads the league in total bases with 28 in conference play. With 16 doubles this season, Williams has already tied the Iowa State single-season record, with nine regular season games remaining. She also ranks No. 1 among all NCAA DI freshmen in doubles.
On Thurs., May 11, the list will be trimmed down to the top 10 finalists, while the top three finalists will be selected and released on Wed., May 24. The Schutt Sports / NFCA Division I National Freshman of the Year trophy will be presented during a live ceremony on May 31.
Williams and the Cyclones return to action this weekend with a three-game road series against Texas. Game one is set for Friday at 4:30 p.m. and can be watched live on the Longhorn Network.
