AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State tennis team (15-10, 1-8 Big 12) will take on Kansas State in the opening round of the Big 12 Championships in Norman, Oklahoma on Thursday at 1 p.m. at the Headington Tennis Center.
The Cyclones are the ninth-seed, while K-State earned the eighth.
Iowa State and Kansas State played earlier in the season on March 24th. The Wildcats were able to win a hard-fought match, 4-0, which snapped a 12-match dual win streak for the Cyclones. K-State was able to grab the doubles point and eventually won three singles matches to lock up the victory.
The Cyclones have seen shuffles in the lineup recently, but will need senior Sami Budai and the Iowa State underclassmen to step up in order to beat the Wildcats.
Maty Cancini, Karen Alvarez, and Margarita Timakova will all be playing in their first Big 12 Championships as they close out their freshman campaigns. Alvarez and Timakova have played well in doubles and will be crucial if Iowa State wants to get off to a hot start. Cancini has also played an important role for the Cyclones, by stepping into the No. 2 singles spot and playing alongside Sami Budai at the No. 1 doubles position.
Budai will hope to extend her stellar collegiate career with a win on Thursday. She has been a leader for the Cyclones throughout the year and helped with the development of a young Iowa State club. The senior from London, Ontario, will look to continue to make her mark in the Cyclone record book. With a doubles win on Thursday, Budai can move into sole possession of the highest doubles win total in school history.
