AMES, Iowa – Iowa State (22-32, 5-12 Big 12) defeated Kansas (24-27, 3-13 Big 12), 3-2, in game two of a three-game series to claim its second-consecutive Big 12 series win and secure a bid in the 2017 conference postseason tournament. Freshman Logan Schaben crushed a two-run home run in the bottom of the second inning to help lift the Cyclones to victory.
Emma Hylen was phenomenal once again in the circle for ISU, going all 7.0 innings while giving up just one earned run (one unearned) on nine hits, to go with four strikeouts. The Cyclones have won five of their last six conference games, a feat the program had not previously accomplished in the Big 12 era. Iowa State is now locked into the No. 5 spot in the Big 12 regular season standings, marking the program's best conference finish since 1994.
Iowa State 3, Kansas 2
The Jayhawks got on the board first in the top of the first inning to take an early 1-0 lead. Jessie Roane laced a double to center field, scoring teammate Lily Behrmann to put the Cyclones in an early hole.
The Cyclones got all the offense they would need in the home half of the second inning. Kelsey McFarland led-off the inning by drawing a walk, and would later be brought in to score on an RBI double from freshman Talyn Lewis. Schaben then stepped to the plate and launched the first home run of her collegiate career to center field on the first pitch she saw. The two-run shot cleared the fence at the Cyclones Sports Complex and gave the Cyclones a lead they would not surrender.
Kansas rallied, scoring once again in the top of the third on an ISU error to cut the lead to 3-2. However, Hylen and the Cyclone defense shut the Jayhawks down from there, piling up four consecutive scoreless innings to lock in their bid to the 2017 Big 12 Softball Championship.
