Hey Cyclone Nation!
I have spent the last three weeks training and playing with the Canadian National team for the second phase of this summer. After a week of training camp in Edmonton, Alberta, we hopped on an 11-hour flight to Beijing, China. This was my first time in China and it was such a cool experience. Our first three games were in a city called Xilinhot, which is in the northeastern part of China. The first two days there we were able to settle in and get adjusted to the 13-hour time change before we started playing games -- this was not easy, let me tell you. The next three days we played Lithuania, Belarus and China. We won two of the three games and got to experience playing three different styles of play which is always super fun.
After about a week in Xilinhot, we packed up our bags, flew back to Beijing and spent the afternoon there. We had the opportunity to visit the Forbidden City, which served as the Chinese Imperial Palace from 1420-1912. It now has over 980 buildings (yes, we walked well over 14km that day) and serves as an art museum to 14 million visitors annually. We drew lots of attention from other visitors as a number of people took pictures of and with us. I guess seeing 11 tall women with Canada across their chest isn't something people see every day.
The next day, we jumped on another flight and headed to Guiyang, China, which was in the southeastern part of China. There, we played the same teams, Lithuania, Belarus and China, and again won two of three and gained a lot more experience. Afterwards, we took a 14-hour flight from Shanghai back to Toronto. After a couple days in Chatham visiting my family, I am now back in Ames for the week and I couldn't be happier! It is so nice being able to hang out with my teammates and get back on the court with everybody. My time here is fairly short though as I am headed back to the third phase of training with the Canadian Senior Team this summer and hopefully get to travel some more. Basketball has already taken me places I could have never imagined and I'm only 20-years old! I'm looking forward to the rest of the summer with Canada Basketball and then school starting before I know it. I can't believe I'm going to be a junior! November and basketball season can't come soon enough.
Go Canada! Go Cyclones!
