Cyclones Defeat Creighton 3-0 In Season-Opener

AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State soccer team (1-0, 0-0 Big 12) opened the 2017 season with a convincing 3-0 victory over Creighton (0-1, 0-0 Big East) Friday night at the Cyclone Sports Complex. Following a 0-0 first half, the Cyclone offense came alive in the second stanza with goals from Brooke Tasker (49'), Merin Mundt (73') and Carly Langhurst (83').

Turning Point of the Game
Brooke Tasker's goal in the 49^th minute broke the game open for an Iowa State side that often found itself bogged down offensively in the first half. Midfielder Marin Daniel poked the ball into an opening off a rebound, finding Tasker in front of the net. The junior then buried it in the right corner, giving the Cyclones a 1-0 advantage early in the second half.

Cyclone Game Ball Goes to...
Merin Mundt. The sophomore was outstanding in Friday's victory, tallying a goal and an assist off the bench in 35 minutes of action. The native of Burlington, Wis., gave the Cyclones some breathing room with a beautiful goal in the 73^rd minute on a free kick, extending the ISU lead to 2-0. Mundt assisted Langhurst just 10 minutes later to help put the finishing touches on a Cyclone victory.

Coach Said It
"Our starters played well in the first 15 minutes, and then they kind of relaxed," Minatta said. "I think it was one of those things where they got comfortable and Creighton never stopped fighting. Coming out of halftime, the starters recognized that they let it go in the first half and they picked it up. Tonight really showed that we do have depth on this team and we can go with a lot of different combinations."

Iowa State hits the road for the first time this season, with a trip to Columbia, Mo. The Cyclones are set to face Missouri (1-0 overall) on Sunday at 4 p.m. CT at Audrey J. Walton Soccer Stadium. The game will be broadcast on the SEC Network.
