AMES, Iowa - Iowa State (1-0, 0-0 Big 12) is headed to Columbia, Mo., for their first road match of the season against Missouri (1-0, 0-0 SEC) on Sunday at 4 p.m. CT. The game will be played at Audrey J. Walton Soccer Stadium and is set to be televised live on the SEC Network.
Scouting the Tigers
Missouri opened their 2017 campaign with a 3-1 victory on the road over Illinois on Friday. The Tigers trailed the Illini 1-0 at the intermission, but hit the gas to pull away with three second-half goals. Macy Trujillo (50'), Jessica Johnson (79') and Madison Lewis (83') provided the offensive flurry for MU.
The Tigers look to be a tough out in the SEC this season, voted fourth in the conference's preseason coaches' poll. Missouri returns its top four point-scorers from the 2016 squad that went 11-7-2 and advanced to the NCAA Tournament.
Sarah Luebbert headlines the MU returnees, coming off a 10-goal, four-assist 2016 season for which she was named the SEC Freshman of the Year. The senior trio of Jessica Johnson, Allie Hess and Kaitlyn Clark were also double-digit point scorers a season ago.
Cyclone Soccer Headlines
-Missouri leads the all-time series vs. Iowa State, 10-6-1. The two teams have not met since Oct. 28, 2011, in a 1-0 Cyclone victory in Columbia.
-The Cyclones opened the 2017 season on Friday with an emphatic 3-0 victory over Creighton at the Cyclone Sports Complex. Iowa State scored all three of its goals in the second half to improve to 3-1 in season-openers under head coach Tony Minatta.
-Iowa State's goals came from Brooke Tasker (49'), Merin Mundt (73') and Carly Langhurst (83'), as the Cyclones put the Bluejays away in the second half. Mundt tallied her goal and assisted on Langhurst's header, tallying three points in 35 minutes. Langhurst's goal to put the finishing touches on the ISU win was the first of her career.
-Tasker and the rest of Iowa State attack were relentless in the second stanza vs. Creighton, out-shooting the Bluejays 14-3 after the intermission. The redshirt junior led the attack with five shots, followed by three shots each for Kasey Opfer and Courtney Powell.
-Five true freshmen played in Friday's win over Creighton, including Dayja Schwichtenberg, who got the start in goal. Schwichtenberg got the shutout win with two saves in the first collegiate action of her career. Abigail Harbin, McKenna Schultz, Kassi Ginther and Courtney Powell were the other freshmen to see game action.
-The Cyclone backline put forth an outstanding effort in support of ISU's freshman goalkeeper, allowing Creighton just two shots on goal and only three corner kick opportunities. Iowa State's center back duo of Brianna Johnson and Jordan Enga both played all 90 minutes of Friday's opener.
-The Cyclones fell to Purdue in exhibition play on Aug. 13 in West Lafayette, Ind. ISU was able to strike first in the outing on a Brooke Tasker goal in the 14th minute, but lost 2-1 as head coach Tony Minatta used the friendly as a chance to test his depth and give his underclassmen valuable experience.
-The Cyclones are set to face one of the nation's toughest schedules, with three games against teams ranked in the NSCAA preseason top-25. Iowa State also holds the distinction of being the only team to play both of last year's NCAA finalists in West Virginia (preseason No. 1) and USC (preseason No. 3). Both games are on the road.
-Despite losing a strong six-player senior class from last season, Iowa State returns its top three point-scorers in Klasey Medelberg, Hannah Cade and Emily Steil. The Cyclones return 14 of 17 goals and 10 of 13 assists from a season ago.
-Cade, a midfielder, was named to the Big 12 All-Freshmen Team in 2016. Cade was second on the team in goals with three, including two game-winners against Big 12 opponents. She was the only freshman to be named Big 12 Freshman of the Week twice in 2016
-The Cyclones finished No. 48 in the final RPI release, climbing 150 spots from their No. 198 finish in 2015. Iowa State's jump of 150 spots was the second most for teams finishing in the top-50 RPI (North Carolina State - 190 spots). The 48th finish in the RPI is also the best in program history.
