Hey Cyclone Nation!
I am finally back in Ames after a long, crazy, exciting summer full of basketball and travelling the world! Since my last blog, I had the opportunity to travel to Argentina as a part of the official Senior Women's National Team and compete for a spot at the 2018 World Cup. Being a member of the Senior Team has been a goal of mine ever since I got involved with the national program over five years ago. It is still so surreal to me that this goal has been achieved. Being able to learn from world class coaches and being surrounded by and competing against professional athletes every day is an opportunity I will never take for granted. I hope to build on this experience and consistently be a part of this team for years to come.
On July 23rd, we started our third and final training camp in Edmonton, Alberta. After a week of practice we set off and touched down in my third continent (Europe, Asia and South America) of the summer. Buenos Aires, Argentina is a beautiful, busy city. It is their 'winter' there, so Canada Basketball sent us big parkas to help stay warm- the parka didn't leave my suitcase. Winter in Argentina is NOWHERE close to the winters in Iowa or Canada.
We began pool play a couple days after arriving. We played Cuba, Puerto Rico, Mexico, and then Paraguay, and came out of the pool undefeated and playing well. We crossed over in the semi-final with Brazil, who is historically a very athletic and strong team. Again, we came out with a dominant victory and excited for the championship game against the host team, Argentina. Sunday night's game against the home team was one I will never forget. The building was LOUD all game, it was hard to hear anything. Argentina came out strong, and we went into halftime down seven. We came out firing in the third quarter and gained a 12-point advantage only to have it slowly disappear. We ended up winning by two, but it was a nerve-wracking finish! Winning the tournament and standing on the podium with the gold medal, singing O'Canada is a memory I will have for the rest of my life. Chills!
After a long travel day home, I got to spend about 48 hours in Chatham catching up with family and friends. But now I am so excited to be back in Iowa and I can't wait to start my junior year!
See you soon!
