AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State softball team opened its 2017 fall schedule with an 8-3 win over DMACC in a nine-inning contest on Sunday. The Cyclones, under first year head coach Jamie Pinkerton, held the Bears to just two hits on the day.
Junior catcher Kaylee Bosworth went 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI and one run scored, while senior Nychole Antillon picked up a hit, two RBIs and a run in two at-bats.
Iowa State 8, DMACC 3
The Cyclones jumped out to an early lead by way of a three-run second inning. Bosworth opened the frame with a base hit and was moved over to third on a double off the bat of Talyn Lewis. The duo was then brought in to score on a one-out single to left field by Antillon. ISU newcomer Hannah Carter then ripped an RBI triple off the fence in left center to extend the Iowa State lead to 3-0, as Antillon raced home.
Iowa State then stretched its lead with one run in each the third, fourth and fifth innings. Taylor Neard, a transfer from Kirkwood, led off the bottom of the third with a single to center. The speedy junior then stole second before being brought in to score on an RBI single by Sami Williams.
Logan Schaben singled up the middle to get things going in the bottom of the fourth. The sophomore would later come in to score on a Konz single, capitalizing on a DMACC throwing error. Iowa State used another Bear miscue in the fifth, as Williams came home on a pair of errors after walking to lead off the inning.
Iowa State utilized a pair of pitchers before DMACC picked up its first base hit of the day. Cyclone starter Brianna Weilbacher went 3.0 innings, giving up no runs on no hits to go with four strikeouts to open the day. Junior Savannah Sanders was just as effective, only surrendering one hit while ringing up three Bear batters in 2.0 innings of work.
DMACC capitalized on an Iowa State error, and drew two walks, in addition to one base hit, as it brought three runs to the plate in the top of the seventh inning.
The Cyclones answered back with one run in both the seventh and ninth innings. Williams reached and advanced to third on another DMACC error in the seventh. She was eventually brought in to score on a sacrifice fly by Montana transfer Sydney Stites. Bosworth drove in the final run of the day with an RBI double to left field, scoring Stites.
Freshman Julie Lewis pitched 2.0 innings, giving up just one hit, while junior Emma Hylen closed out the game, throwing the final 2.0 innings with no runs on no hits.

Iowa State continues its fall slate of game on Saturday at the Cyclone Sports Complex. The Cyclones take on Kirkwood at 10:30 a.m. and MidAmerica Nazarene at 3:30 p.m.
