LAWRENCE, Kan. – Iowa State (23-30, 4-14 Big 12) fell 4-1 in its regular season finale at Kansas (27-25, 2-16 Big 12) on Sunday at Arrocha Ballpark. The Cyclones tallied six hits against KU pitcher Sarah Miller, but were unable to score outside of an RBI double by freshman Skyler Ramos.
The Cyclones will now prepare for the 2018 Big 12 Championship in Oklahoma City, Okla., where Iowa State will be the No. 6 seed. The tournament is May 11-12 at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium.
Kansas 4, Iowa State 1
A three-run home run down the left field line by Sam Dellinger in the bottom of the first inning put the Cyclones in an early hole. Jessie Roane started the inning with a base hit, and Harli Ridling reached on an ISU fielding error, setting up Dellinger's three-run shot that stayed just fair to put KU ahead 3-0 after one.
Pitcher Brianna Weilbacher, a senior from Columbia, Ill., bounced back tremendously from that point forward, hanging zeros on the board for KU over the next four innings. The defense did its part as well, turning double plays in the third and fifth innings to hold the Jayhawks in check.
Freshman Skyler Ramos provided a spark for the second day in a row at Arrocha Ballpark, putting the Cyclones on the board in the top of the fifth inning. Junior Taylor Nearad started the inning by bunting for a base hit. Ramos then stepped up and ripped an RBI double to right center field, cutting KU's lead to 3-1. Ramos then stole third base, but Iowa State was unable to capitalize, leaving a pair of runners stranded.
The Cyclones left two runners stranded once again in the sixth, with Bryn Hanrahan on third and Kirsten Caudle on second, unable to come up with the timely hit needed to rally. Kansas tacked on a run via an RBI double by Mikayla Warren in the bottom of the sixth, to hold on for the 4-1 win.
Weilbacher ended her outing with 5.0 innings pitched and gave up four runs (three earned) on six hits. Savannah Sanders entered in the sixth and allowed one hit without being charged with a run.
