OKLAHOMA CITY – Iowa State (23-32, 4-14 Big 12) went 0-2 on day one at the Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship, falling 7-0 to Texas (31-23, 10-8 Big 12) in game one, before dropping a 9-6 battle to defending national champion Oklahoma (49-3, 18-0 Big 12).
Texas 7, Iowa State 0
The Longhorns scored four runs on four hits, and were aided by a pair of ISU errors in the bottom of the first inning to take control early. Janae Jefferson opened the game by bunting for a base hit, and then stole second and advanced to third on an ISU error. She later stole home to scratch out the first run of the game. Kaitlyn Washington and Kaitlyn Slack came up with RBI base hits later in the inning to extend the UT lead to 4-0.
ISU starting pitcher Savannah Sanders settled in following the first inning, hanging a pair of scoreless frames on the board before a solo home run by Randel Leahy put UT ahead 5-0.
It was a struggle offensively all afternoon for the Cyclones against UT pitcher Brooke Bolinger, accumulating just four hits in the game, and none for extra bases after a double by Sydney Stites in the top of the first inning.
The Longhorns plated two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on a two-RBI double by Malory Schattle to come away with a 7-0 win in the opening game of the day.
Oklahoma 9, Iowa State 6
The Cyclones came into the nightcap vs. No. 1-seeded Oklahoma with a purpose, starting with the defense. Iowa State ended the first Sooner scoring threat of the night with a 4-6-3 double play that left an OU runner on board.
Iowa State then got their bats going, quieting the pro-Oklahoma contingent in OKC with a four-run first inning. Sami Williams opened the frame with a base hit to center field, followed by Stites reaching on an Oklahoma error. A base hit for Kaylee Bosworth then loaded the bases with no outs for Nychole Antillon.
The senior out of Orange, Calif., hit a fielder's choice to the infield, but a throwing error by the first baseman allowed Williams and Stites to come home, giving Iowa State a 2-0 lead. Junior Sally Woolpert then stepped to the plate and ripped a two-RBI double to left center, scoring Bosworth and Antillon to put the Cyclones up 4-0 after one inning.
The Sooners responded, scoring three runs in the top of the second inning. Fale Aviu started the scoring with an RBI double, and Oklahoma later edged closer, scoring on an ISU fielding error, followed by a successful sac bunt to make the score 4-3. Oklahoma tied it at 4-4 in the ensuing inning with an Aviu RBI single to center field.
Oklahoma took its first lead of the game in the top of the fifth, breaking the tie on a bases-loaded walk issued to Raegan Rogers. Sydney Romero then put OU up 7-4 with a two-RBI single to right field. Iowa State was forced to use three pitchers in the inning, as Brianna Weilbacher entered in relief of starter Emma Hylen early in the frame. With two outs, Savannah Sanders entered for Weilbacher and pitched the remainder of the game.
The Sooners tacked two more runs on the board in the top of the seventh inning, but the Cyclones continued to battle. Logan Schaben provided one last offensive punch, smashing a two-run home run off of OU ace Paige Parker to cut the lead to 9-6.
