IRVING, Texas – Iowa State cross country and track athlete Evelyne Guay and wrestler Colin Strickland have been named recipients of the 2017-18 Dr. Prentice Gautt Postgraduate Scholarships, announced today by the Big 12 Conference.
The scholarships are named in honor of the late Dr. Prentice Gautt, a former Big 12 Conference staff member and student services' pioneer who passed away in March 2005.
Criteria for the awards includes a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 on a 4.0 scale, participation in at least two years of intercollegiate athletics at the nominee's respective institution and completion of athletics' eligibility.
A native of Oakville, Ontario, Guay graduated from Iowa State with a degree in Kinesiology. She plans on returning home to Canada where she will be attending school at the University of Ottawa working toward her medical degree.
"I think my parents summed it up best for me," said Guay. "It's not about the money, it was about being selected. I'm so grateful for this community of Cyclones that have given me so much at Iowa State. Through athletics, academics and emotional support, I'll never be able to thank them enough and I'm so grateful."
Strickland is a native of Altoona, Iowa. He graduated in May with a Master's degree in Political Science from Iowa State. He will continue his education in the Drake doctorate program this fall, where he has been admitted into the Education program.
"This scholarship means a great deal to me," Strickland said. "I can illustrate to my family how all of the help they have given me has been worth it. My career goal has always been to make a positive impact on the world and this scholarship will help make it possible to pursue this dream."
