MEXICO CITY, Mexico – Iowa State women's basketball freshman Ashley Joens captured a Gold medal with USA Basketball, defeating Canada 84-60 in the championship game of the FIBA U18 Americas Women's Championship in Mexico City. Joens scored 10 points and dished two assists in the win.
Joens, who was the second-leading scorer for Team USA throughout the tournament, is the first Iowa State women's basketball player to capture a Gold medal with USA Basketball. She also served as the captain for Team USA, averaging 10.7 points, 4.5 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.3 steals.
"It's such a huge honor to me to just be able to compete and represent the United States," Joens said. "To be able to win a Gold medal for the U.S. is incredible."
Team USA's Gold medal was the 10th gold medal all-time at the women's U18 level and the ninth-consecutive.
Joens will return to Ames later this week and join the Cyclones on their foreign tour to Costa Rica later this week.
