Alvarez Unbeaten On Day One In Alabama

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Iowa State senior Karen Alvarez advanced to the finals after an unbeaten day at the Roberta Alison Classic hosted by Alabama.
Alvarez beat UT Martin's Jillian Niedzialowski, 6-1, 7-6 (1), in her first singles match and then disposed of Kennesaw State's Aspen Jarrett, 7-6, 6-0, to advance to the finals. She will face Troy's Tijana Svitlica in the championship match.
Alvarez's success came on the heels of a doubles victory alongside partner Oumaima Aziz. The pair beat UT Martin's duo of Aziza Aubin and Mizuki Sakurai, 6-3.
Freshman Thasaporn Naklo fell to Ole Miss' Isolde de Jong, 7-6 (5), 6-2, before bouncing back with a convincing 6-2, 6-1, win against Emma Antonaki of Mississippi State.
The Cyclones will resume action tomorrow morning at 10 a.m.
