AMES, Iowa - Iowa State begins the last week of the regular season on Wednesday at Kansas. First serve between the Cyclones and Jayhawks will be at 6:30 p.m. inside the Horejsi Family Athletic Center.
The Cyclones are well-rested after having the weekend off, and will be looking to shake-off the disappointment of a 3-1 loss at Texas Tech last Wednesday.Â
Wednesday night's match will be streamed on Big 12 Now on ESPN+, here. Live stats will be provided by Kansas, here.
Iowa State fell to Texas Tech 3-1 last Wednesday in Lubbock. The Cyclones picked up the first set and dropped the final three, the first time in 2019 that ISU was unable to convert at first set win into a match win. The visitors were led by a dynamic performance from Candelaria Herrera, who had a season-high 16 kills at .394 hitting, two service aces, five blocks and five digs. Josie Herbst had 14 kills, her first double-figure effort since Oct. 5, while Eleanor Holthaus (13 kills/13 digs) and Piper Mauck (45 assists/15 digs) both had dobule-doubles.
Kansas comes into its Senior Night 8-16 overall and 4-10 on the season. The young KU squad has ben playing some of its best volleyball as of late, beating K-State 3-1 on Nov. 16 and taking a set off then-No. 1 Texas on Saturday night. The Jayhawks were led by senior outside Ashley Smith, who had 16 kills against the Longhorns. Setter Sara Nielsen had a double-double of 34 assists and 11 digs.
KU is the Cyclones' most frequent opponent in program history, as Wednesday will be the 96th meeting between the two teams. Iowa State leads the all-time series 51-43-1, with ISU riding a four-match winning streak. A win on Wednesday night to extend the streak to five matches would be the Cyclones' longest run of success vs. KU since taking six-straight from 2005-07.
ISU won the first meeting between the two teams 3-0 in Ames on Oct. 2. The Cyclone defense was strong, notching 11.0 total blocks (Candelaria Herrera leading the effort with six blocks) to hold Kansas to .126 hitting on the night. Josie Herbst led the Cyclone attack with 15 kills at .314 hitting, while Izzy Enna, deputising for an injured Michal Schuler at libero, led the back row with 11 digs.
