Iowa State Takes On Southern In Season Opener

AMES, Iowa -The Iowa State women's basketball team is set to take Southern on on Thursday, Nov. 7 at 6:30 p.m. at Hilton Coliseum in the season opener.Â
As a reminder, Hilton Coliseum has instituted a Clear Bag Policy for athletic events. The policy will enhance security while improving efficiency at the entry gates.

- The NR/24 Iowa State women's basketball team will officially begin the 47th season in program history on Thursday, Nov. 7 when it takes on Southern at 6:30 p.m. The Cyclones are 1-0 against Southern, having topped SU 86-46 in 2015 in Ames.
- Iowa State checked in at No. 24 in the USA Today Coaches Poll to start the season. This marks the ninth time in program history the Cyclones were ranked in the AP or USA Today Coaches Poll to start the season.
- Junior Kristin Scott picked up right where she left off last season, earning a spot on the Preseason All-Big 12 team. Scott earned second-team honors last season after averaging 12.8 points and 7.1 rebounds per game. She also held team-highs in field-goal percentage (56.1) and 3-point percentage (38.1).
- Sophomore Ashley Joens, earned honorable mention All-Big 12 honors to begin the 2019-20 campaign. Last season she was named to the Big 12 All-Freshman Team, and connected on a team-high 72 3-pointers last season, which ranks first all-time among ISU freshmen. Joens' 408 points last season tied for second most all time by an Iowa State freshman.
- Iowa State returns 53.7 percent of its scoring from last season's team, which scored more points than any team in Iowa State history. ISU also returns 65 percent of its rebounding from last season. The Cyclones return three starters from last season's 26-9 squad, with Madison Wise joining Joens and Scott.
- Joens and Scott each found themselves on a pair of preseason watch lists, with Joens being named one of 20 players on the Cheryl Miller Award Watch List, which honors the nation's top small forward. Last season, senior Bridget Carleton was named the Cheryl Miller Award winner, marking the first time a Cyclone has claimed a national position award. Scott on the other hand, was named to the Lisa Leslie Watch List, which honors the country's best center. Scott is the first Cyclone to be named to the Lisa Leslie Watch List.
- Scott is the only returning power-5 center to average over 12.0 points, 7.0 rebounds and to shoot over 55 percent from the floor.
- Joens is was one of just 11 players from a major conference last season to average 11.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and hit over 70 3-pointers. She joins an impressive list of, Bridget Carleton, Sabrina Ionescu, Alanna Smith, Taylor Emery, Tynice Martin, Sophie Cunningham, Natisha Hiedeman, Satou Sabally, Rhyne Howard and Stephanie Watts.
- The 2019-20 season marks the 25th in the tenure of Bill Fennelly. Fennelly has led Iowa State to 18 NCAA Tournament appearances. Fennelly boasts a 505-262 record at Iowa State and a 671-315 record in his 30-year career as a head coach. His 671 career wins lists him in the top-15 in the NCAA among active coaches in Division I and in the top-50 winningest coaches all-time
