URBANDALE, Iowa - Iowa State (3-2, 1-0 Big 12) defeated West Virginia (2-1, 0-1 Big 12), 5-2, Sunday morning at Life Time Fitness. The win marked the Cyclones' seventh win against the Mountaineers in the eight all-time meetings. Â
"I was proud of how we rebounded after a tough loss on Friday," head coach Boomer Saia said. "We came out with so much energy and it was a fantastic team win."
Iowa State's more aggressive doubles style continues to pay off this season as the Cyclones got off to another hot start against West Virginia. Maty Cancini and Annabella Bonadonna had a dominant showing against Paula Goetz and Nicole Roc, downing the Mountaineer duo, 6-1.
In the No. 3 doubles spot, Ekaterina Grib and Margarita Timakova defeated Giovanna Caputo and Abigail Rosiello, 6-2, to clinch the doubles point for Iowa State.
"We've come out very aggressive and with a ton of energy and we're giving ourselves a chance to win every doubles point," Saia said. "Starting off the match with that point is super important."
Ekaterina Repina extended the Cyclone lead to 2-0 in the No. 3 singles match after she defeated Nicole Roc, 6-2, 6-1.
After a win in the No. 3 singles match, Regina Espindola moved into 10th place on Iowa State's career singles win list. The senior picked up a 6-1, 6-4 win to extend the Cyclone lead to 3-0.
Annabella Bonadonna clinched the match for Iowa State in the No. 5 singles spot, winning 6-4, 6-2 against Anastasia Bovolskaia.
Maty Cancini got herself back in the win column against Christina Jordan, defeating the Mountianeer, 6-3, 6-4.
West Virginia would pick up two points in the final two matches of the dual, winning the No. 2 and No. 5 singles matches.
Iowa State returns to action Friday, Feb. 23 at 2 p.m. against Omaha at the Life Time Fitness in Urbandale. Â
