FAYETTEVILLE, Arkansas – The outdoor track and field season began for Iowa State in much the same way that a lot of the indoor season went: with Vlad Pavlenko crushing records. The Cyclone All-American opened up ISU's competition at the Arkansas Spring Invitational at John McDonnell Field by winning the hammer throw with a school-record throw.
Pavlenko's winning throw of 216-10 (66.09m), crushing the previous mark of 207-1 by Josh Koglin in 2011. Pavelnko's previous best in the hammer throw was 199-0 at last season's Sun Angel Classic.
The previous school record was taken down three times on Friday afternoon. The first came on Pavlenko's third throw, as his toss of 208-10 (63.67m) moved him into the lead. Arkansas' Erich Sullins countered with a fourth throw of 209-10 (63.96m), but Pavlenko immediately countered in the fourth round with a 211-3 (64.38m) to move back ahead. With the win secure, Pavlenko let lookse and fired his new school record on his final throw of the day at 216-10 (66.09m).
