AMES, Iowa – Iowa State women's basketball head coach Bill Fennelly was named a finalist for the 2019 United States Marine Corps/WBCA Division I National Coach of the Year Award on Tuesday. Fennelly was one of 13 finalists for the prestigious honor, presented annually by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association.
Fennelly, among the nation's most respected coaches, guided the 2018-19 Cyclones to an outstanding 26-9 record and a second-place finish in the Big 12, going 13-5 in league play. The Cyclones earned a bid to the NCAA Tournament for an unprecedented 18th time in Fennelly's 24-year tenure at the helm of Iowa State basketball.
The 26 wins amassed by the 2018-19 Cyclones are tied for the third-most wins in a single season in Iowa State women's basketball history. Fennelly's squad was led by Big 12 Player of the Year Bridget Carleton, who became the first player in program history to earn the league's highest individual honor.
The legendary Cyclone head coach boasts a record of 671-315 over his 30-year career as a head coach. His 671 career wins put Fennelly in the top-15 in the NCAA among active coaches in Division I, and in the top-50 winningest coaches of all-time.
