CYCLONE NOTEBOOK
1. The Iowa State softball team (9-8) is headed west to compete in Cal Poly's ShareSLO Mustang Classic in San Luis Obispo, Calif. this weekend. The tournament, which will be played at Bob Janssen Field, will include Cal Poly, Iowa State and Utah State. The Cyclones play Cal Poly three times over the weekend, and will play Utah State twice.
2. The Cyclones will take on a Cal Poly squad coached by Iowa State softball legend Jenny Condon. Condon, who was inducted into the Iowa State Athletics Hall of Fame in 2003, was the first All-American in program history, earning second team honors in 1989. She earned All-Big Eight and All-Midwest Region honors three times during her career in Ames.
3. Iowa State junior Sami Williams had her best weekend of the season at the Lopes Up Classic in Phoenix, leading the Cyclones to a 3-2 record at the tournament, with wins over Utah, Northern Colorado and South Dakota. Williams hit .526 (10-of-19) at the tournament with six RBI's, two home runs and three doubles for a 1.000 slugging percentage.
4. Williams continues to climb the ISU career record charts during her junior campaign. The native of Laguna Niguel, Calif., is already No. 2 on Iowa State's all-time list in batting average (.369), T-No. 1 in doubles (41) and No. 7 in home runs (23). She needs one more double to break the program record held by Lexi Slater (2012-15). Williams is currently tied for third in the Big 12 with seven doubles on the year.
5. Williams is coming off a Second Team All-Big 12 season in which she hit .388 (No. 6 single-season batting average in school history), to go with 12 home runs and 14 doubles. Williams was named to the 2018 Google Cloud Academic All-America Division I Softball Team, selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Williams maintained a 4.0 GPA in software engineering.
6. Freshman Shannon Mortimer had her best weekend in a Cyclone uniform at the Lopes Up Classic. The ISU newcomer collected the first wins of her collegiate career, going 2-0 with wins over Utah and Northern Colorado. Mortimer pitched a team-high 13.0 innings on the weekend with a 1.08 ERA and four strikeouts in three appearances. Mortimer is tied for fifth in the Big 12 in complete games with three on the season.
7. The Cyclones notched their second win of the season over a 2018 NCAA Regional squad in taking down Utah, 7-4, on March 1. Iowa State exploded for six runs in the top of the fifth inning to propel them past the Utes. ISU had two triples in the game, courtesy of Taylor Nearad and Kirsten Caudle, tied for the most in a game by a Big 12 team this season.
8. Kasey Simpson, another Cyclone rookie, has emerged in head coach Jamie Pinkerton's lineup of late. Simpson, a native of Keller, Texas, hit .417 on the weekend in Phoenix while starting four out of five games. Simpson, who came to Iowa State as the highest-rated signee in school history (ranked No. 33 nationally by FloSoftball), has played both DP and second base this season.
9. Emma Hylen had her best outing of the season in a 2-1 extra-inning win over South Dakota. The junior allowed just five hits and no earned runs with five strikeouts in the victory. She pitched all 9.0 innings, the most innings pitched in a single game in the Big 12 this season.
10. Savannah Sanders put on one of the best performances of her career vs. Marshall in the first game in Charleston, S.C. The senior pitched a one-hit gem with seven strikeouts to lead the Cyclones past the Thundering Herd, 1-0. Sanders' seven K's were her most in a game since March 26, 2017 (9 vs. Texas Tech).
11. Iowa State hit a single-season school record 45 home runs in 2018, breaking the previous program mark of 40 set during Pinkerton's first stint at Iowa State as an assistant coach in 2013. Williams led the way with 12 homers on the year, as ISU returns 36 of its 45 dingers from a season ago.
12. The Cyclones aren't strangers to playing in hostile environments, as just seven of ISU's last 73 contests have been played at home, dating back to 2018. ISU was the only Power 5 program in the nation that played fewer than 12 home games in 2018, and tied for No. 7 nationally in NCAA DI for fewest total home games played.
