AMES, Iowa – For the first time in 31 years, the Iowa State softball team will be extending its postseason beyond the Big 12 Championship, earning a bid to the National Invitational Softball Championship (NISC).
It marks the program's first time in a national postseason tournament since 1988, when they advanced to NCAA Regionals in Lincoln, Neb.
Iowa State will serve as one of four regional hosts in the tournament, which begins Thursday at the Cyclone Sports Complex. Eastern Kentucky, Purdue, South Dakota and South Dakota State will joining Iowa State in the Ames regional.
South Dakota and Purdue open the tournament at 10 a.m. on Thursday, with South Dakota State and Eastern Kentucky to follow at 1:00 p.m. in the first day of the three-day, double-elimination regional. Iowa State will then play the winner of the South Dakota State/Purdue game at 4 p.m. Champions from the four regionals advance to the championship round beginning Wednesday, May 23 in Fort Collins, Colo., at Triple Crown Sports.

Under the guidance of second-year head coach Jamie Pinkerton, Iowa State finished the regular season 32-23 overall, the program's winningest season since going 33-17-1 in 1989. The Cyclones finished fifth in the Big 12 and knocked off No. 8 Texas in its first game at the 2019 Big 12 Championship. The victory over the Longhorns was Iowa State's first win over a top-10 opponent since 2013.
