CYCLONE NOTEBOOK
1. The Iowa State softball team (28-22, 4-11 Big 12) returns home to the Cyclone Sports Complex this weekend for a three-game series against Kansas (15-32, 3-12 Big 12). The series is scheduled for Friday at 4 p.m., Saturday at 1 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m. Admission is free to all home softball games at the Cyclone Sports Complex. All three games will also be broadcast live on Cyclones.tv.
2. Sunday's regular season finale (first pitch at 1 p.m.) will be followed by senior day festivities for ISU's eight seniors:Â Kaylee Bosworth, Kirsten Caudle, Jaclyn Chairez, Emma Hylen, Taylor Nearad, Savannah Sanders, Sydney Stites and Sally Woolpert.
3. This weekend's series holds postseason implications for both teams. With a series win, the Cyclones can clinch the No. 5 seed at the 2019 Big 12 Softball Championship. The Jayhawks can assure themselves a postseason bid with one victory over the weekend, and will be the No. 5 seed with two wins or a three-game sweep.
4. Iowa State's 28 wins are the program's most since going 29-29 in 2008. The Cyclones are just two victories away from ISU's first 30-win since 1989. A series win vs. Kansas would secure a fifth-place finish in the Big 12, tied for the program's best since 1993.
5. Kansas leads the all-time series vs. Iowa State, 38-61-0, meaning Friday's series-opener will be the 100th meeting all-time between the two programs. In program history, Oklahoma (112 meetings) is the only team Iowa State has faced on the softball diamond more times than Kansas.
6. Entering the final week of the regular season, Iowa State is ranked No. 56 in the NCAA's weekly RPI rankings. No. 56 would be the highest RPI finish in program history. The Cyclones were ranked No. 44 on April 8, 2019, which was the highest weekly RPI ranking ever achieved by Iowa State.
7. The Cyclones are looking to rebound after being swept in a three-game series at home by No. 1 Oklahoma. Iowa State's three games vs. the Sooners were the third, fourth and fifth meetings vs. a No. 1-ranked foe this season, the most ever in a single season in ISU history.
8. Junior Sami Williams is one of just three players in the country with at least a .390 batting avg., 18 doubles and 12 home runs this season. Williams is the only player from a Power 5 conference with these numbers.
9. Through 50 games, Williams has already put up unprecedented numbers for the Cardinal & Gold. She is the first player in program history to record 11+ home runs and 14+ doubles in the same season. She is three home runs shy of breaking ISU's single-season home runs record (14) and three doubles shy of breaking her own single-season doubles record (20).
10. Senior pitcher Emma Hylen, already Iowa State's career leader in saves with nine, continues to climb Iowa State's all-time rankings in several categories. Her 40 career wins are No. 5 in ISU history. She is also among the all-time leaders in appearances (No. 3- 138), games started (No. 5 - 73) innings pitched (No. 5 - 519.2) and strikeouts (No. 10 - 295).
11. The Cyclone pitching staff, under the tutelage of pitching coach Kate Sinnott, has shown tremendous improvement in 2019. The group's combined ERA of 3.44 is on pace to be the best by an Iowa State staff since 2009 (2.73). Shannon Mortimer's 3.24 ERA would be the best single-season figure by a Cyclone pitcher since 2010 (Rachel Zabriskie - 2.74).
12. Senior Savannah Sanders is also climbing Iowa State's all-time pitching charts. The native of Mt. Juliet, Tenn., is No. 3 in school history with 78 career starts, No. 4 in games pitched with 120 and No. 9 in innings pitched with 438.0. Sanders is also No. 12 in all-time strikeouts with 268.
13. Iowa State's defense has made tremendous strides in their second season working with head coach Jamie Pinkerton and assistant Courtney Martinez, who has been charged with tutoring the infield. Iowa State has turned a Big 12-leading 25 double plays on the season, tied for No. 9 in the country. The Cyclones also rank No. 3 in the Big 12 with a .968 fielding percentage.
14. 2019 is the first season in program history that Iowa State has swept two Power 5 opponents (Baylor & Georgia Tech) in a three-game series.
