AMES, Iowa – Iowa State's Sami Williams and Mikayla Ramos earned All-Big 12 softball honors, the league office announced Wednesday. Williams is a First Team All-Big 12 selection, while Ramos was named to the All-Freshman Team.
This is the third all-conference selection of Williams' career, and the second time she has received first team honors. She is the first Cyclone since Erica Miller (2012, 2013) to be named to the All-Big 12 first team multiple times in her career. The native of Laguna Niguel, Calif., has been simply phenomenal during her junior campaign. Already Iowa State's career doubles leader with 52, Williams is hitting .386 and has tied the single-season program record with 14 home runs on the year. She is one of just three players in the country with at least a .385 batting average, 18 doubles and 14 home runs on the year, and the only player from a Power 5 conference with such numbers.
Williams closed out the 2019 regular season with a flurry, hitting extra-inning, walk-off home runs in two of Iowa State's three games on senior weekend to lead the Cyclones to a sweep of Kansas.
Ramos has added offensive firepower to the Cyclone lineup in her first season in Ames. The native of Riverside, Calif., has tallied 18 hits, 11 RBI and seven runs this season, and has elevated her play against Big 12 competition. She is hitting a team-best .353 in conference play while knocking in three RBI in 12 appearances. Ramos is the first Cyclone to earn All-Freshman Team honors since Williams in 2017.
The Cyclones and second-year head coach Jamie Pinkerton will be back in action this weekend at the Big 12 Championship in Oklahoma City, Okla. Iowa State is the No. 5 seed, and will face No. 3 Texas (2 p.m.) and No. 2 Oklahoma State (5 p.m.) on Friday at USA Hall of Fame Softball Complex. Iowa State's fifth-place finish in the Big 12 is tied for its best final conference standing since 1993.
