AMES, Iowa - The 2019 Iowa State volleyball season begins this weekend at the Rebel Invitational, hosted by Ole Miss. The Cyclones will begin the season taking on UCF on Friday at 3 p.m., followed by the Cyclones taking on the host Rebels on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. This is the first time ISU has opened its season on the road since 2013.
Iowa State and UCF will be meeting for the first time on Friday. The Cyclones are not unfamiliar with teams from the American Athletic Conference (AAC), as ISU finished 2018 by defeating Tulane in the NIVC Championship match and have beaten Wichita State each of the past three seasons.
The Knights are coming off one of their best seasons in program history, going 27-4 last year, including an undefeated record in the AAC and at home in 2018. UCF also earned the No. 13 overall seed in the NCAA Volleyball Championships, hosting the first and second rounds in Orlando.
The Cyclones and Rebels meet for the second-straight season, as Iowa State opened 2018 in Hilton Coliseum by sweeping the Rebels. The match turned out to be the Cyclones' top offensive output of 2018, as the squad hit .433 in the victory. Eleanor Holthaus led the way that day with 10 kills at .714 hitting in her first match as a Cyclone.
Ole Miss finished last season 14-18. This is also the meeting of the previous two NIVC champions, as Ole Miss won the tournament in 2017.
