BOONE, North Carolina – Iowa State (5-3) wrapped up a 2-0 day at the Appalachian Invitational with a 3-0 (25-22, 25-16, 25-19) win over hosts Appalachian State (3-6) Friday night at the Holmes Convocation Center.
The Cyclone attack clicked their way to a season-best .456 hitting percentage, the eight-best single-match hitting percentage in program history and the third-best under head coach Christy Johnson-Lynch. Leading the way was Josie Herbst, who got her 11 kills at a career-best .588 hitting percentage. Candelaria Herrera had 10 kills at .444 hitting.
Set One: Iowa State 25 Appalachian State 22
A tight first set did not see either team able to pull ahead by much. A 3-0 run allowed ASU to get ahead 4-2, but that was the last time either side would be ahead by two until ISU got ahead 15-13 on a Mountaineer attack error. The visitors made it three at 18-15 on a block by Annie Hatch and Candelaria Herrera. App State fought back within one on multiple occasions, but Avery Rhodes came up with a kill and solo block to restore the three-point lead at 22-19. The Cyclones wrapped up the first when Herrera killed at 25-22 ISU.
Set Two: Iowa State 25 Appalachian State 16
Appalachian State snuck ahead early at 6-4, but the Cyclone block helped get ISU back into the set and ahead at 9-8 on a Piper Mauck kill. Tied at 10-10, Iowa State took advantage of some ASU errors to get ahead 19-10, a run which included three Eleanor Holthaus kills and a Josie Herbst ace. That was more than enough for ISU, who hit .522 as a team for the set (the Cyclones' best hit percentage in a set in 2019) while restricting the home team to .156 hitting. The Cyclones made it 2-0 when Herbst killed at 25-16.
Set Three: Iowa State 25 Appalachian State 19
Both offenses were strong early, as once again neither team could get an early advantage. Iowa State began to build some momentum mid-set, getting on a 6-0 run to move ahead 18-14. That would be all the advantage ISU would need as the Cyclone offense continued to roll, hitting .500 in the final frame. Hatch sealed match point with her eighth kill of the night at 25-19.
Player of the Match
Josie Herbst. ISU's lone senior showed what she could do once again, recording her sixth match of the season in double figures. Herbst finished with 11 kills at .588 hitting, the best hit percentage of her career. She also chipped in with seven digs and an ace.
