BOONE, North Carolina – Iowa State (6-3) wrapped up a 3-0 weekend and 4-0 week with a 3-1 (23-25, 25-13, 25-18, 25-20) win over North Carolina State (3-5) Saturday afternoon at the Holmes Convocation Center. The win crowned ISU champions of the 2019 Appalachian Invitational.
The Cyclones had another strong day on the attack, with five Cyclones posting at least nine kills while hitting .319 as a team. Eleanor Holthaus led the way with 15 kills at .371 hitting, five digs and five blocks. Joining her in double figures was Avery Rhodes (career-high 11 kills at .500 hitting and four blocks), Josie Herbst (11 kills) and Candelaria Herrera (10 kills at .412 hitting and six blocks). Izzy Enna and Michal Schuler each had 13 digs to lead the back-row, with Enna getting a hat-trick of aces in the third set.
Set One: North Carolina State 25 Iowa State 23
The Wolfpack won the first three points of the match and were able to maintain a steady lead for the first half of the set. NC State led at 13-8, but the Cyclones battled back within one point at 14-13 when Candelaria Herrera and Piper Mauck combined for a block. The Pack got ahead again by three at 19-16, but ISU retaliated with a 4-0 run powered by two Eleanor Holthaus kills to move ahead 20-19. NC State responded with a 4-0 run of its own to get to set point first at 24-21. ISU held off two set points, but Annie Hatch fired long to give NC State the first 25-23.
Set Two: Iowa State 25 North Carolina State 13
Iowa State flew out the gates this time, using the block to push out to a 4-1 advantage. The Cyclones continued to pile on from all fronts, with both the block and attack doing its thing to help push ISU ahead by six at 11-5. There were contributions from all over the court, with the attack hitting .370, the block adding six stuffs and there were also three aces, two from Michal Schuler. The Cyclones led by as many as 11 points and wrapped up its comprehensive set victory when Avery Rhodes killed at 25-13.
Set Three: Iowa State 25 North Carolina State 18
Iowa State broke open the set with a 6-0 run powered by a hat-trick of aces from Izzy Enna to move ahead 10-4. The Cyclones took advantage of the Wolfpack's offensive struggles, as NC State committed four unforced attack errors to help push the Cyclones ahead 13-5. The Pack fought back to within three at 17-14, but the Cyclones battled back ahead to a comfortable six at 21-15. The ISU defense held North Carolina State to .111 hitting for the set, and moved ahead 2-1 when Holthaus got her 13th kill at 25-18.
Set Four: Iowa State 25 North Carolina State 20
Josie Herbst led a 3-0 run to get ISU ahead 5-1, a lead that would not be relinquished. Enna did well again to bring pressure from the service line and spark a 4-0 run to push the Cyclones ahead 13-5. The Iowa State attack was back to doing the damage, as ISU notched 16 kills and hit .429 in the final set. The Cyclones wrapped up the set and the match when Rhodes got her career-high 11th kill at 25-20.
Player of the Match
Piper Mauck. The Cyclone offense had a strong weekend all around, and got a balanced attack today thanks to the work of the ISU setter. Mauck set the Iowa State attack to .319 hitting, with five different Cyclones posting at least nine kills on the day. She also notched seven digs, three blocks and an ace.

Iowa State wraps up non-conference play next weekend in Iowa City at the Cy-Hawk Series Tournament. ISU will play three matches, starting on Thursday against Lipscomb at 7 p.m. inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
