AMES, Iowa – Iowa State (2-1) won its home opening match of the season with a 3-0 (25-19, 25-18, 25-19) sweep over South Dakota (3-1) Tuesday night at Hilton Coliseum.
Iowa State was led on the attack by a tandem of Josie Herbst and Annie Hatch who each had 13 kills apiece, with Herbst posting hers at a .500 hitting percentage. Eleanor Holthaus notched 10 kills and eight digs. The back-row was led by Piper Mauck's nine digs to go with 35 assists. Mauck set the Cyclones to a .305 hitting clip on the evening.
Set One: Iowa State 25 South Dakota 19
Iowa State started hot as they jumped out to an 8-2 lead, forcing an early USD timeout. Iowa State kept South Dakota at bay the rest of the set, as the Coyotes never came closer than five points. Josie Herbst lead a balanced attack for the Cyclones with five kills. Annie Hatch and Candelaria Herrera both had four kills, and Michal Schuler had an ace in the set.
Set Two: Iowa State 25 South Dakota 18
Neither team saw much breathing room at the start of the second set. Iowa State eventually jumped out to a 9-5 lead, only to see that lead quickly erased as USD rallied to tie the set at ten all. Iowa State finally opened up a bit of breathing room pushing its lead to 18-13 and later winning the set 25-18. Michal Schuler had another ace in the set. Iowa State hit .486 for the frame and ended the set with an Annie Hatch kill.
Set Three: Iowa State 25 South Dakota 19
The third set was similar to set two, as Iowa State and USD initially started close, only to see ISU grab a 8-4 lead. Iowa State extended the lead to 13-8, which USD quickly cut down to a one point lead at 13-12. Iowa State was able to fend off the early comeback efforts, eventually winning the set and match on Herrera's kill at 25-19.

Josie Herbst. Iowa State's senior led the way Tuesday night. She paced the attack, leading the team with 13 kills. Herbst posted a .500 hit percentage while also recording six digs on the night.
