URBANDALE, Iowa – The Iowa State tennis team capped off its afternoon doubleheader sweep with a victory over South Dakota, winning 4-0. Iowa State moved to 2-1 on the season with both wins coming on Friday.
The Cyclones came out firing on all cylinders to start the second matchup of the afternoon. All three doubles pairings shut out their opponents 6-0 to convincingly earn the doubles point.
Entering singles play, it was the depth of Iowa State's starting six on display as the Cyclones were leading in all six slots at the point of completion. At the top of the order, freshman Thasaporn Naklo beat Jana Lazarevic 6-1, 6-0 to continue her stellar first year.
In the No. 4 slot, fellow freshman Ting-Pei Chang beat Nanette Nylund 6-1, 6-0 to remain undefeated on the spring season. Margarita Timakova bested Eesha Varma 6-1, 6-2 in the No. 6 slot to earn her first win of the spring season.
While most of the Cyclones handled their opponents with relative ease, Maty Cancini showed her grit on the court. After falling behind in the first set 0-5, the senior clawed her way back to take the first set 7-5 before the fourth team point was earned.
The Cyclones return to action with a Sunday morning and afternoon doubleheader in Urbandale. Starting at 11 a.m., Iowa State will face off against Northern Iowa and follow that up at 5 p.m. with a matchup against Omaha.
