HONOLULU, Hawaii – Iowa State (2-1) picked up a pair of wins on Friday at the Paradise Classic, defeating Northern Colorado (1-2) 11-0 to open the day, followed by an 8-4 come-from-behind victory over host Hawaii (1-1).
Senior Logan Schaben hit two home runs in game one to pile up a career-high five RBI. Ellie Spelhaug was another standout, holding the Bears to just one hit in a complete game shutout in her first career start in the circle.
The Cyclones rallied from a 4-1 deficit vs. Hawaii with a seven-run top of the sixth inning. Senior Hannah Carter went 3-for-3 at the plate in the game, while Carli Spelhaug was 2-of-3 with two RBI and two runs scored. Sami Williams hit a home run in both games, bringing her total to three this season.
Iowa State 11, Northern Colorado 0
Freshman pitcher Ellie Spelhaug was in control from the get-go in the first game of the day, waiting until the midway point of the contest for her offense to break out. The native of Bettendorf, Iowa made the most of her first collegiate start, stifling Northern Colorado's offense throughout. Spelhaug surrendered just one hit and allowed two Bear base runners all day, and none after the second inning.
After ISU missed out on a golden opportunity to open the scoring in the top of the first, senior Logan Schaben was the first to draw blood for the Cyclone offense. The Portsmouth, Iowa, native stepped to the plate with two outs and crushed a solo home run to left center to push the Cyclones in front, 1-0.
Fellow senior Sami Williams followed suit in the ensuing inning, launching a three-run shot to right field, scoring teammates Alesia Ranches and Bryn Hanrahan. It was Williams' second home run in as many games.
Spelhaug, meanwhile, continued to roll in the midst of retiring 15 consecutive Northern Colorado batters while getting tremendous support from her defense.
The Cyclone offense exploded in the top of the seventh inning, piling on seven more runs. Senior Hannah Carter roped a two-RBI double down the left field line, scoring Hanrahan and Lea Nelson to start the scoring outburst. Kasey Simpson would later draw a bases-loaded walk to extend ISU's advantage to 7-0.
Schaben came to the plate once more and hit a grand slam to right center for her second home run of the day. It was the second multi-home run game of her career, and set a new career high with five RBI.
Spelhaug sealed the deal in the bottom of the seventh, putting the finishing touches on a one-hit complete game shutout. It was the first one-hitter by a Cyclone pitcher since Feb. 24, 2019 (Tatum Ksiazek vs. Dartmouth).
Iowa State 8, Hawaii 4
UH jumped out to an early lead after taking three walks in the first inning, followed by an RBI collected by Angelique Ramoss on a pop fly in foul territory. Brittnee Rossi tagged up at third base and scored on the play to give the Rainbow Wahine an early 1-0 lead.
The lead grew to 2-0 in the following inning on a solo home run by Hawaii's Sammie Ofoia.
Iowa State responded in the top of the third, jump started by a double down the left field line by Carli Spelhaug. The freshman then advanced to third on a fly out by Williams. Schaben then stayed hot at the plate, blasting an RBI single through the left side to score Spelhaug and cut the deficit to 2-1.
Hawaii's lead grew again in the bottom of the fourth on a pair of RBI base hits courtesy of Callee Heen and Maya Nakamura to put UH ahead 4-1. Starting pitcher Janessa Jasso exited midway through the inning. The freshman put together a solid collegiate debut, allowing just two hits in 3.2 innings. Fellow freshman Karlie Charles entered in relief and was outstanding, holding the Hawaii offense in check over the final 3.1 innings.
The Cyclones then exploded for a seven-run sixth inning to take their first lead of the night. Simpson, Ranches and Carter all collected base hits to load the bases with one out. Iowa State then capitalized on a UH error, scoring pinch runner Lea Nelson. Hanrahan earned a bases-loaded walk in the ensuing at-bat to make it just a one-run deficit. Spelhaug then put the Cyclones in front with a two-RBI single up the middle to make it a 5-4 Iowa State advantage.
Williams kept the Cyclone momentum rolling by crushing a three-run home run, her third of the season, to right center to extend the lead to 8-4 before Hawaii could get out of the inning.
Charles and the Cyclone defense wrapped up the win in the bottom of the seventh. She allowed no runs and just two hits to pick up her first career win.
