AMES, Iowa – Iowa State women's basketball sophomore Ashley Joens received honorable mention honors by the USBWA on Monday. Joens was one of just a handful to receive the distinction, awarded to those receiving significant votes for All-America.
Joens becomes the third Cyclone to earn USBWA honors, joining Bridget Carleton who earned a spot on the third team last season. Angie Welle was the other USBWA honoree in 2001. The sphomore was also honored as an honorable mention All-American by the Associated Press and is a top-5 finalist for the Cheryl Miller Award.
The Iowa City, Iowa native, has turned heads during her sophomore campaign, and finished the season first in the Big 12 in scoring and 11th in the nation, averaging 20.5 points per game, while her 10.5 rebounds ranks third in the Big 12 and 13th nationally, the most of any guard in the league. Joens was the only player in the NCAA averaging over 20.0 points, 10.0 rebounds, and is also the only player in the Big 12 ranking in the top-5 in points and rebounds for the season.
Recently she was named one of three unanimous selections to the All-Big 12 First-Team. Joens is currently averaging a double-double with 20.5 points and 10.5 rebounds and claimed a league-high six Big 12 weekly honors.
Joens notched her 1,000th career point as Iowa State topped No. 2 Baylor, ending the Lady Bears' 58-game win streak in Big 12 play. Joens netted the final three points as Iowa State topped Baylor, 57-56. Joens has 594 points on the year, which ranks fifth on ISU's single-season charts.
