MANHATTAN, Kansas – Iowa State (1-0) was able to recover from losing a 2-0 lead to defeat Kansas State (0-1) 3-2 (25-22, 25-20, 19-25, 15-25, 16-14) Friday night at Bramlage Coliseum.
Iowa State claimed the first two frames, but the K-State attack surged back, hitting .351 across the third and fourth sets to tie it back up. However, it was the Cyclone offense that roared in the fifth, hitting .444 in the final frame. Leading the ISU effort was a pair of double-doubles from juniors Eleanor Holthaus (17 kills, 15 digs) and Brooke Andersen (career-high 13 kills, 14 digs). Candelaria Herrera chipped in 10 kills. Izzy Enna led the back-line with 17 digs.
Set One: Iowa State 25 Kansas State 22
K-State claimed the first three points of the contest, but the advantage was short lived as the Cyclones took their first lead on a Brooke Andersen ace, going on a 4-0 run to move ahead 9-6. It ended up being a 10-1 run, as a disciplined Iowa State defense helped guide the visitors ahead 16-8. The Wildcats strung together a 7-0 run to get within a point at 16-15, but Annie Hatch was able to end the run and stay ahead. Avery Rhodes got her third kill of the set via a blocking error to make it 25-22 Iowa State.
Set Two: Iowa State 25 Kansas State 20
Candelaria Herrera had a big run to help give Iowa State the lead. Her big kill, followed by ISU's first block of the match from her and an ace by the Argentine put Iowa State ahead 14-12. The Cyclone serve, which racked up three aces in the first set was again a lethal weapon in the second, notching another trio of aces, with Andersen, Izzy Enna and Annie Hatch also getting in on the action. After no blocks in the first frame, the Cyclone defense stepped up with four in the second, with Herrera and Jenna Brandt's combo putting the set out of K-State's reach for good. Andersen's third ace of the night gave ISU the set 25-20.
Set Three: Kansas State 25 Iowa State 19
The Cyclones held tough in a battling frame, but K-State was able to eventually breakthrough with a 4-1 run to get ahead 18-15. ISU quickly got back into it with three kills in four points by Eleanor Holthaus to get back within one at 19-18. However, that was as close as ISU would get as the 'Cats hit .304 on the frame, finishing it off with Brynn Carlson notching consecutive kills to finish it at 25-19, KSU.
Set Four: Kansas State 25 Iowa State 15
Kansas State's offense was on fire to begin the fourth, hitting .500 to get ahead 16-10. The Cyclone attack had a challenging frame, hitting just .179, and unable to take advantage of three service errors by the Wildcats. K-State forced a fifth set when Carlson notched her 17th kill of the night at 25-15.
Set Five: Iowa State 16 Kansas State 14
K-State was its own worse enemy to open the set as they sent back-to-back shots long on second contact to give ISU a 2-0 advantage. When they decided to set a hitter, Carlson on the outside, Brandt and Herrera was there to stuff it and give Iowa State a 3-0 lead. ISU got to eight first at 8-5 on a K-State attack error, but K-State was able to tie it up at 8-8 on a Kadye Fernholz block. Holthaus killed to give ISU the first chance at match point at 14-13, but K-State fought it off. Hatch tipped to make it 15-14, and give the Cyclones another shot, which was converted this time when K-State fired wide at 16-14.

Eleanor Holthaus. In the lean times of the match for the Cyclones, it was their All-Big 12 right side that they were able to continue to look to for throughout the match. She led Iowa State with 17 kills at .316 hitting, notching 15 digs for her fifth career double-double.
