LAWRENCE, Kansas – Iowa State (11-4, 3-1 Big 12) powered past Kansas (11-4, 3-1 Big 12) 3-0 (25-20, 25-20, 25-20) Saturday at the Horejsi Family Volleyball Center to leave Lawrence with a weekend split. Iowa State swept Kansas in Lawrence for the first time since 2018.
Iowa State's attack dominated, hitting .368 against the Jayhawks Eleanor Holthaus led the Iowa State attack with 15 kills at a season-best .481 hitting percentage and got her second double-double of the weekend with 14 digs. Kenzie Mantz notched 11 kills at .400 hitting. Marija Popovic led ISU with 18 digs, while Allie Petry had 10. Candelaria Herrera led the ISU block with five stuffs.
Set One: Iowa State 25 Kansas 20
Iowa State started on a roll, with Jaden Newsome spreading the ball around the court well. ISU's first 10 kills came from six different student-athletes with ISU hitting over .500 as the visitors ran out to a 12-4 lead. Kansas was able to work back to within two at 20-18 when Caroline Crawford put down an overpass, but Alexis Engelbrecht returned the favor to re-up the ISU lead to 22-18. Iowa State's offense was too much, with the Cyclones hitting .439 across the frame, with Eleanor Holthaus killing to wrap up the first 25-20 to the visitors.
Set Two: Iowa State 25 Kansas 20
Kansas got off to some good starts, but ISU was able to wipe away early KU advantages, using 3-0 runs to tie the set again at 5-5 and 9-9. Iowa State struggled to take the next step to get back into the set, as KU worked ahead by three again on multiple occasions, lastly at 19-16. With Allie Petry behind the line, she was able to frustrate the Jayhawk passing and spark a 7-0 run which included three kills for Holthaus, to make it 23-19 ISU. Iowa State's offense ended up hitting .394 on the set and moved ahead 2-0 in the match when Holthaus tipped to the back corner for another 25-20 set win.
Set Three: Iowa State 25 Kansas 20
The Jayhawks again got off to a solid start, but once more their advantage was erased by a big ISU run, with the Cyclones running off four-straight, capped by a Kenzie Mantz solo block to move ahead 9-7. Jaden Newsome got big to deny Crawford a kill on an overpass at 19-12, but KU fought back with a 6-1 run to get back within two at 20-18. Mantz stopped the KU momentum with a kill and bring home the Iowa State sweep. The Cyclone defense stepped up in the third, holding Kansas to .150 hitting for the set while recording 6.0 total blocks in the frame. KU was called for a back-row violation on match point to give ISU the third and the match.
Player of the Match
Eleanor Holthaus. ISU's All-Big 12 right side had her most efficient performance of the season, getting her match-high 15 kills at .481 hitting. She also had her third-straight double-double with 14 digs on the night.
