Men's Preview
A battle of two top-five teams will be going down as Iowa State's No. 2 squad will be taking on hosts No. 5 Oklahoma State. It is looking like it will be another close and intense competition like last season. A year ago in Kansas, ISU and OSU tied with 31 team points, but the Cowboys brought home the team trophy via tiebreaker.
There is a good chance of déjà vu with a lot of familiar faces from last season back, with OSU boasting six of its top-seven, and Iowa State five of its top-seven. The Cyclones do bring back the defending conference champion in Wesley Kiptoo, with the senior winning last year's conference crown by 14 seconds. Kiptoo was the winner at Wisconsin's Nuttycombe Invitational two weeks ago and took second to defending NCAA champ Connor Mantz of BYU at the Roy Griak Invitational last month.
Iowa State has four other All-Big 12 returnees from 2020 entered in Festus Lagat (3rd in 2020), Chad Johnson (7th), Thomas Pollard (11th) and Gable Sieperda (14th). With a top-15 finish, Pollard can become the first five-time All-Big 12 XC honoree, while Johnson can join Pollard and the seven other men in Big 12 history who have been four-timers.
Women's Preview
For the No. 17 Iowa State women, there is plenty of intrigue both within the team and individual competition. The Cyclones, the 2020 Big 12 champions, will face stiff competition from No. 7 OSU on the Cowgirls' home course. Cailie Logue two most recent Big 12 XC titles have come ahead of a pair of Cowgirls entered in Molly Born (2019) and Taylor Roe (2020).
Logue has a pair of history-making chances while leading the Iowa State women on Friday. The three-time defending Big 12 champion has the chance to become the first four-time champion in conference history, male or female, and with a top-15 finish can become the first five-time All-Big 12 XC woman in league history. Logue's title defense will not be easy. Along with OSU's contingent, West Virginia's Ceili McCabe shocked everyone with her win at the Nuttycombe Invitational two weeks ago and will be looking to get WVU's first Big 12 XC title.
Logue is joined by a trio of 2020 All-Big 12 returnees in Brenna Cohoon (5th in 2020), Winrose Chesang (7th) and Dana Feyen (8th). Adding a crucial piece to the ISU equation is Ashley Tutt, who was a 2020-21 NCAA XC Championships qualifier and won the 2019 MAC Championship, both while at Northern Illinois. Tutt was the second Cyclone finisher to Logue at both the Griak and Nuttycombe Invitationals.
