AMES, Iowa – Iowa State (16-9, 8-6 Big 12) was not able to complete a weekend sweep, as the Cyclones fell to Kansas State (15-8, 6-6 Big 12) 3-0 (23-25, 13-25, 23-25) Saturday afternoon on Senior Day at Hilton Coliseum.
The K-State attack clicked to a strong .282 hitting percentage while holding ISU to .133 hitting in the match. Despite only recording three service aces, the Wildcats serving caused the Iowa State offense to become more predictable, leading to 12.0 total K-State blocks in the match.
In defeat, Eleanor Holthaus led ISU with 11 kills, while Annie Hatch had eight. Marija Popovic and Jaden Newsome each had 11 digs, while Candelaria Herrera led the front-line with three blocks.
Set One: Kansas State 25 Iowa State 23
ISU got off to as good of a start as they could ask for, as Eleanor Holthaus had three kills to push ISU ahead 5-0. K-State battled back quickly, blocking Candelaria Herrera to tie the set at 8-8, but ISU was able to hold onto the lead for a little longer before Sydney Bolding's kill gave the visitors their first lead at 14-13. Andersen once again stepped up from behind the service line with a 5-0 run to re-establish the ISU lead at 18-14, but K-State once again rallied and tied it again at 21-21 on an Aliyah Carter kill. K-State got to set point first at 24-23 and got it on first asking when Bolding and Bonde combined to stuff Avery Rhodes, KSU's sixth block of the set, to claim it 25-23.
Set Two: Kansas State 25 Iowa State 13
K-State incrementally built up a lead with small two and three point runs, and then made a big breakthrough with a 5-0 run on the back of a strong Loren Hinkle serve. While the Wildcats only had two aces in the set, their serve was giving ISU's passing all kinds of issues, leaving plenty of easy shots for a Wildcat squad that combined to hit .542 on the set, only committing one attack error. K-State got ahead 2-0 with a 5-0 run to finish the set, Holthaus being called for an illegal back-row attack at 25-13.
Set Three: Kansas State 25 Iowa State 23
K-State got a 3-0 run to move ahead 6-3, but ISU did not allow the visitors to be ahead for long, tying it at 9-9 after consecutive Wildcat attack errors. Holthaus killed to give the Cyclones their first lead of the set at 14-13. The teams combined to tie 13 teams, but the lead only changed hands twice. After ties at 17s, 19s, 20s, 22s and 23s, K-State got to match point first with a Kadye Fernholz kill, and got match point on first asking when Jaden Newsome's set for Herrera was too close to the net at 25-23.
