12.10.2021 | Track and Field
AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State track and field program will compete at home for the first time this indoor track and field season on Saturday during the ISU Holiday Invitational. Field events will begin at noon, with running events at 1 p.m. The full meet schedule for the four-team meet that includes the host Cyclones, Drake, UNI and Indian Hills CC, can be viewed, here.
There will be no live video of the competitions, while live results will be provided by Wayzata Timing, here.
The Iowa State men got off to a strong start last weekend with a big collection of performances at the Woo Pig Classic in Arkansas and Wesley Kiptoo's school record and collegiate No. 3 all-time 13:14.74 in the 5,000m in Boston that saw him named USTFCCCA National Athlete of the Week. The Cyclone men will be aiming to hit marks that will qualify them for the NCAA Indoor Championships this weekend in the 800-meter run, set to go off at 2:35 p.m.
Last weekend, four Cyclones went below 2:22 in the 1,000-meter run and they are all slated to go in the 800m this weekend in Jason Gomez (an NCAA Indoor and Outdoor All-American in 2021 at 800m), Darius Kipyego, Alex Lomong (a 2021 NCAA Outdoor All-American at 800m) and Nehemia Too (a member of ISU's All-America indoor DMR team in 2021). Other Cyclones who will be aiming for big marks in that 800m are Cebastian Gentil, a two-time All-American running the 400m leg of ISU's DMR teams and Frank Hayes, a two-time All-American indoors during his time at Ohio State.
For the Iowa State women, a lot of familiar faces will be seen in the sprinting events and throws, while the Cyclone mid-distance and distance group will not have all the faces from the NCAA Cross Country Championships ninth-place team three weeks ago, that will open up the possibility of other, younger faces to show what they can do in competition.
There are also plenty of Cyclones entered on both in men's and women's competitions that will be looking for their ISU debuts this weekend. The men's throwing events also feature a group of Cyclone student-athletes who will be competing unattached.
