AMES, Iowa – Iowa State opened its indoor home campaign with five victories during the ISU Holiday Invitational Saturday at the Lied Recreation Athletic Center. The Cyclones saw some strong performances across all disciplines to build on heading into the meets in 2022.
The feature event was the men's 800-meter run and the Cyclones put up a slate of strong performances, with four ISU runners going under 1:50. Leading the way was Cebastian Gentil, with the two-time All-American for Iowa State's distance medley relay teams posting the best individual performance of his ISU career, taking second place with a personal best time of 1:48.95. The time moved him into ISU's all-time top-10 for the event at No. 9, and at the time of publication saw him at No. 3 in the NCAA Division I rankings this indoor season.
Joining Gentil among the top performers were Nehemia Too in third in a personal best 1:49.08, Darius Kipyego going fourth in an indoor PR of 1:49.50, Alex Lomong in fifth in 1:49.87 and Frank Hayes sixth in 1:51.78. At the time of publication, all four of them joined Gentil among the top-10 in NCAA Division I this season.
The highlight of the women's performers on Saturday came from Zakiyah Amos in the 400-meter dash, with the Houston native posting a huge personal best of 54.70, the first sub-55 of her career and the first by a Cyclone woman indoors since 2015, to take the victory. At the time of publication, Amos' mark sits No. 3 nationally in NCAA Division I this season.
In the throws ring Antonella Creazzola, fresh off representing her native Venezuela at the Pan American Junior Games last week, posted a personal best in the weight throw of 59-6 3/4 (18.15m) to get the win and move to No. 10 in ISU history in the event.
Other winners on the day for the Cyclone women were Katarina Vlahovic in the 60-meter hurdles (8.39), Grace Dickel in the 3,000-meter run (9:53.59) and Sydney Willits in the long jump (19-5 1/2, 5.93m).
