Cyclones Get Five Wins at Jim Duncan Invitational

DES MOINES, Iowa – Iowa State's distance groups at the Jim Duncan Invitational got five victories on Friday at Drake Stadium, with a number of notable and strong performances highlighting the day.
The Cyclones already boast one strong steeplechaser in Abby Caldwell, but Friday saw the emergence of another one in the form of Janette Scharft. Making her ISU outdoor and steeplechase debut, Schraft pulled away from the field to win in a meet-record time 10:36.26, good for No. 5 in Iowa State history.
Caldwell had her own strong performance on the day, taking the 1,500-meters in 4:27.79, a personal best by nearly 10 seconds. Teammate Madelynn Hill came second, just missing out on her personal best in 4:42.71.
In the women's 5,000-meter run, Caldwell was on pacing duties and left the race to be decided between her teammates Winrose Chesang and Dana Feyen, both running in their first outdoor meets as Cyclones. It was Feyen who was able to prevail, bringing home the victory in a big personal best of 16:37.35, with Chesang second (16:52.42). ISU also got fourth via Grace Dickel (16:59.13) and fifth from Brenna Cohoon (17:03.92).
The Cyclone women also got a win from Alexis Gourrier in the 800-meter run in 2:18.17.
The Iowa State men's day was highlighted by a victory from Gable Sieperda in the 1,500-meter run, as he led an ISU 1-2-3 in 3:52.72, followed by Jeffery Pedersen (3:54.02) and Mitchell Day (3:54.75). Thomas Pollard made it another four-in-five race for ISU by finishing fifth in 3:56.34.

The Cyclones are scheduled to compete next weekend at the Bryan Clay Invitational, hosted by Azusa Pacific and the Michael Johnson Invitational at Baylor.
