The No. 10 Iowa State men arrive in Eugene with high hopes, with the Cyclones' 10 entries on the men's side making them one of 15 men's programs to have double figure entries this week. Things begin in the field at 4:30 p.m. Central on Wednesday with Vlad Pavlenko in the hammer throw. Already owning Second Team and Honorable Mention All-America nods in his career, Pavlenko has a good chance to get his first First Team All-America honor in his final meet as a Cyclone, with the senior ranking No. 5 in the field with his school-record 237-7 (72.41m) throw from May.
The Cyclones' other field competitor goes on Wednesday at 8:15 p.m. Central in Scott Fuchs in the men's javelin. ISU's first men's javelin NCAA qualifier since 1986, Fuchs has been doing the best throwing of his career heading to Eugene. At the Big 12 Championships, he set a personal best with a huge personal best of 236-8 (72.12m) to take the silver medal and followed that up at NCAA West Preliminaries with a third-place 230-2 (70.16m).
On the track, the ISU men have David Too first toeing the line in the 3,000-meter steeplechase semifinal at 7:32 p.m. Too, making his NCAA Championships debut, has continued to improve throughout the season, going below 8:40 for the first time at NCAA West Preliminaries with his 8:39.64.
Iowa State's top-ranked men's 800-meter run squad takes the track for their semifinal at 8:44 p.m. Central, with Festus Lagat, Jason Gomez and Alex Lomong all involved. Lagat, the 2019 NCAA Outdoor Championships bronze medalist with his school-record 1:45.05, is No. 4 in the field with his 1:46.09 from last month. Gomez, who was fifth at the NCAA Indoor Championships in March in this event, clocked an outdoor personal best of 1:47.82 at NCAA West Preliminaries, while Lomong matched his season-best 1:47.69 in College Station to book his first career NCAA Championships trip.
No stranger to the NCAA Outdoor Championships is Eric Fogltanz, who is in his third-straight Championships in the 400-meter hurdles. A four-time All-American, Fogltanz posted a personal-best 50.09 at NCAA West Preliminaries to secure his latest trip to Eugene.
Wednesday night closes with a highly-anticipated men's 10,000-meter run final at 9:38 p.m. Central featuring ISU's Wesley Kiptoo and Edwin Kurgat among a host of other notable strong names and performers. Kiptoo, with three Big 12 titles and as the top finisher in both the 5K and 10K at NCAA West Prelims to his name this outdoor season, will get a chance to meet up again with the two men who beat him at the NCAA Cross Country Championships in March in BYU's Conner Matnz (who has the top 10K time during the 2021 outdoor season in 27:41.16) and Florida State's Adriaan Wildschutt (who was the top finisher at the NCAA East Prelims at 10K), while Kurgat, the 2019 NCAA Cross Country champion, an eight-time All-American and eight-time Big 12 champion during his time at Iowa State, toes the line for the last time as a Cyclone looking to add another piece to his incredible career.
Thursday belongs to the women and Iowa State's Cailie Logue, who runs the 10,000-meter run final at 8:08 p.m. Central Time. Logue, already with All-America honors in cross country and indoors in her career, gets to make her NCAA Outdoor Championships debut against a strong field after successfully navigating a challenging 10K in the Texas heat at NCAA West Preliminaries two weeks ago.
Friday goes back to the men's squad, with the Cyclones hoping to be in the finals of the steeplechase (7:24 p.m. Central), 800m (8:14 p.m.) and 400m hurdles (8:27 p.m.). The final competitor of the meet for the Cyclones will be Kiptoo again in another much-anticipated final of the men's 5,000-meter run at 8:55 p.m. Central. Kiptoo will get to square up against two of the three men who have defeated him this outdoor season in Oregon's Cole Hocker and Cooper Teare, as both edged Kiptoo at Hayward Field in the 5K at the Oregon Relays in April.
