AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State soccer team opens the 2021 campaign Thursday, Aug. 19, in California, as the Cyclones face UC Santa Barbara in the season opener for both schools. Kickoff is set for 9 p.m. (central) at Theodore Harder Stadium in Santa Barbara, Calif. The match will be available on Big West TV, while a link to live stats is available at Cyclones.com.
KEY STORYLINES
-UC Santa Barbara leads the all-time series 1-0. The Gauchos defeated Iowa State 2-1 on Sept. 12, 2004 in California.
-Iowa State went 1-0-3 during the spring season just a few months ago. The Cyclones ended the year with a 1-0 win at Kansas State.
-Iowa State has had four consecutive matches end in a tie for the first time in program history last year.
-Midfielder Mira Emma led the Cyclones with eight points last season. Emma scored three goals, which was also the most on the team, while adding a pair of assists.
-Goalkeeper Jordan Silkowitz played all 1,263 possible minutes for the Cyclones last year. She recorded 58 saves, while allowing 14 goals in 13 matches. Silkowitz pitched three shutouts last year.
-Silkowitz was named the Big 12 Goalkeeper of the Week four times last season. Her four times earning the honor are the most in a season in Big 12 history.
-The Cyclones have eight international players on the roster for 2021. Tyra Shand, Anna Lindgren, Elin Persson and Clara Thimstrand are all from Sweden. The roster also consists of players from the United Kingdom, Canada, Switzerland and Austria.
-Iowa State returns nine starters from last season, all of which started all 13 matches. Of those nine, eight played over 1,000 minutes on the season. Four players that scored a goal last year return for the 2021 season, including Emma, who scored three goals last season.
-The 2021 Iowa State schedule features three opponents ranked in the top 25 in the country and two more that received votes in the preseason top 25 poll.
-Six Cyclone opponents in 2021 played in last year's NCAA Tournament, with three of them picking up at least one victory. TCU, Oklahoma State and Iowa all advanced to at least the second round.
