SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The newcomers stole the show Thursday night, as Iowa State opened the 2021 soccer campaign with a 2-0 victory over UC Santa Barbara at Theodore Harder Stadium.
Iowa State improved to 1-0 on the year, while the Gauchos dropped to 0-1. UC Santa Barbara was playing its first match since Nov. 7, 2019 after not playing last season due to Covid-19. Iowa State will play one more match in California, as the Cyclones face CSUN Sunday at 1 p.m. (central). Live video will not be available for the match with the Matadors, but a link for live stats is available at Cyclones.com.
"Tonight was a very professional performance," Iowa State Head Coach Matt Fannon said. "It was a hard-fought and fully deserved win."
Both Cyclone goals came in the first half and were from a pair of freshmen making their collegiate debuts. In addition to the offense coming from fresh faces, sophomore Cora Anderson made her collegiate debut in the net and pitched a shutout.
In the 18th minute, Lauren McConnell headed in a pass from Brooke Miller for her first goal. It was the first career assist for Miller as well. In the 40th minute, Anna Lindgren scored her first goal on her first shot attempt, giving the Cyclones a 2-0 lead late in the first half. Anderson recorded a save in each half.
Iowa State held an 8-6 advantage in shots, including a 6-2 edge in the opening 45 minutes. Six of Iowa State's shots were on goal, while just two were on goal for the Gauchos.
