NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – A goal midway through the second half gave CSUN a 2-1 win over Iowa State Sunday afternoon at the Matador Soccer Field.
The loss dropped Iowa State to 1-1 on the season, while CSUN improved to 1-1 on the year. Iowa State returns to action on Thursday, as the Cyclones travel to Iowa City to face the Hawkeyes in the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series matchup. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. and will be aired on Big Ten Network.
"The truth is today, was just a poor performance overall," Iowa State Head Coach Matt Fannon said. "We have plenty to learn from the game, but otherwise we are moving on and getting back to the levels we have come to expect. I have no doubt we will do that."
CSUN started the scoring in the 17th minute, as Ashley Cruz scored from 12 yards out on the right side off an assist from Cindy Arteaga. Just over 10 minutes later, Mira Emma evened the match in the 28th minute. Her first goal of the season came off an assist from Lauren McConnell and Anna Lindgren. With the match tied in the second half, Kacie Garrity scored the game-winner off an assist from Dayne Wagner to give the Matadors the victory. The Cyclones had a shot to tie the match in the final seconds, but the shot went high.
Emma led the Cyclones with a match-high five shots, with one coming on goal. McConnell and Lindgren both added a shot on goal. Cora Anderson recorded a pair of saves in the net, as she dropped to 1-1 on the season. Iowa State held a 9-7 advantage in shots, while the Matadors had a 4-3 advantage in shots on goal. Both teams recorded two saves.
