AMES, Iowa -Â The Iowa State soccer team wraps up a two match trip to California on Sunday with a match against CSUN. Both teams opened the season Thursday night, with the Cyclones beating UC Santa Barbara and the Matadors falling to Long Beach State. KEY STORYLINES
-Iowa State beat UC Santa Barbara 2-0 Thursday night in the season opener.
-Lauren McConnell and Anna Lindgren scored the two Cyclone goals against UC Santa Barbara, marking the first pair of freshman to score in a match since Sept. 4, 2016.
-McConnell led the Cyclones with two shots on goal in the opener, as Iowa State had a 6-2 advantage in shots on goal.
-Sophomore Cora Anderson made her collegiate debut in the net, recording a pair of saves while pitching a shutout.
-Four Cyclones made their first collegiate start Thursday night against UC Santa Barbara. Four more Cyclones came off the bench for their first collegiate appearance
as well.
-Five different Cyclones had a shot on goal against UC Santa Barbara on Thursday night. Lauren McConnell led the way with a pair of shots on goal, while scoring the first goal of the match.
-Iowa State Head Coach Matt Fannon recorded his 85th career victory on Thursday against UC Santa Barbara. Fannon won 40 matches at Wittenberg and 41 at Bowling Green prior to his time at Iowa State.
-Taylor Bee, McKenna Schultz and Cora Anderson played all 90 minutes on Thursday against UC Santa Barbara. Schultz played all 1,263 minutes for the Cyclones last year.
