CORALVILLE, Iowa – Iowa State (6-2) was unable to wrap up an undefeated weekend, as the Cyclones fell 3-0 (20-25, 19-25, 21-25) to Iowa (1-6) Saturday evening at Xtream Arena in the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series.
In defeat, ISU was led by Candelaria Herrera, who had 11 kills at .429 hitting and three blocks. Alexis Engelbrecht tied her career-high with eight kills at .636 hitting. Marija Popovic led the back-row with 13 digs.
Set One: Iowa 25 Iowa State 20
The Cyclones used a 4-1 run, capped by a block from Engelbrecht and Solei Thomas to move ahead 7-4. Iowa went big with a 6-0 run led by a pair of kills and a block from Amiya Jones to move ahead 11-8. ISU moved back within a pair at 18-16 when Thomas fired back-to-back kills in a 3-0 run. However, ISU could not take the next step, as the Cyclones were held to .167 hitting in the first, with Eleanor Holthaus blocked to close the first frame, 25-20.
Set Two: Iowa 25 Iowa State 19
Brooke Andersen's trip behind the service line resulted in a 4-0 run, which included an ace for the Cyclone senior that helped put the visitors ahead 6-3. The Hawkeyes tied it 7-7 on an Edina Schmidt kill off an overpass, and restored their lead at 10-9 on a Mari Hinkle ace. ISU used a 3-0 run to tie it back up at 14-14 on an Addie VanderWeide attack error, but Iowa got back-to-back aces from VanderWeide during a 5-0 run that put the set out of ISU's reach. Despite hitting .417 for the set, the Hawkeyes countered with .483 hitting on the frame. Iowa wrapped up the set with a VanderWeide kill at 25-19.
Set Three: Iowa 25 Iowa State 21
After ISU got the first point of the set, the Hawkeyes held the lead and were able to keep ISU off-guard until getting some breathing room with a 3-0 run to move ahead 17-13. Iowa State battled back to within one at 18-17 on an ace from Allie Petry, but were never able to take the final step to tie the set back up. Courtney Buzzerio got her 15th kill of the night to wrap things up at 25-21.
