AMES, Iowa – A goal in the 35th minute gave Iowa State a 1-0 victory over Creighton Thursday night at the Cyclone Soccer Complex.
The victory improved Iowa State to 3-4 on the season, while Creighton dropped to 6-2-1. The loss was the first since Aug. 26 for the Bluejays, as they had a streak of five-straight shutouts snapped. Creighton had allowed just two goals in eight matches on the year entering Thursday night. Iowa State returns to action Sunday, as the Cyclones face South Dakota in the non-conference finale. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. in Vermillion, S.D.
"To keep them out when they were playing well, those were big moments while we were playing well," Iowa State Head Coach Matt Fannon said. "They have risen (the freshmen) incredibly. Clara (Thimstrand) tonight, even with her getting the goal, was unbelievable defensively. I'm really proud of all of them."
Iowa State's lone goal came in the 35th minute off a free kick. Goalkeeper Jordan Silkowitz found senior Brooke Miller, who sent a cross into the box where freshman Clara Thimstrand booted in her first career goal. It was the second assist of the season for Miller and the first of Silkowitz's career.
Anna Lindgren, Taylor Bee, Claudia Najera, Thimstrand and Miller each had a shot for the Cyclones, with Thimstrand's goal the only one on goal. Silkowitz recorded three saves in the net, as she moved to 2-3 on the season. Silkowitz now has 80 saves on her career, as she pitched her fifth career shutout. Iowa State defender McKenna Schultz started her 60th career match against Creighton.
Few teams have found the back of the net on Creighton goalkeeper Keelan Terrell, as she surpassed 500 straight minutes without allowing a goal before Thimstrand found the back of the net. Terrell entered the match as the NCAA leader in shutouts this season.
Iowa State improved to 7-1-1 all-time against the Bluejays in just the second meeting all-time in Ames. Iowa State is now 6-1-1 under Fannon while scoring first. The Bluejays had a 7-5 advantage in shots, including 3-1 in shots on goal.
