UNIVERSITY PARK, Pennsylvania – Iowa State (3-1) suffered its first loss of 2021 Friday night, falling to No. 17 Penn State (2-1) 3-0 (25-18, 25-11, 25-23) at Rec Hall in the Penn State Classic. ISU, who defeated LSU 3-1 earlier in the day, will get the chance to finish the weekend on a winning note tomorrow afternoon against Oregon State.
The Cyclones struggled to find answers to stopping a Nittany Lions attack that hit .337 for the match, with ISU only countering with .128 hitting for the evening.
In defeat, ISU was led by nine kills at .381 hitting from Eleanor Holthaus, who also had nine digs. Kenzie Mantz got seven kills. Marija Popovic led the back-line with 10 digs, while Candelaria Herrera recorded five blocks (one solo, four assists).
Set One: Penn State 25 Iowa State 18
Jaden Newsome bailed ISU out of some early passing struggles, winning a couple of 50-50s at the net to keep ISU in the set. The Nittany Lions finally started to make ISU pay, with back-to-back Allie Holland kills on Cyclone overpasses moving the home side ahead 8-4. Alexis Engelbrecht and Eleanor Holthaus combined for a block on Erika Pritchard to get back within two at 10-8, but PSU went on a 6-0 run in response to move ahead for good. Despite holding off four Penn State set points, the Nittany Lions eventually wrapped up the first when Kaitlyn Hord killed at 25-18.
Set Two: Penn State 25 Iowa State 11
After firing wide to start the set, Penn State converted on five of its next six shot attempts to push ahead 8-3. From there it was all Penn State, as the home team's attack rolled to .560 hitting in the set, only committing two attack errors across the set. PSU libero Jenna Hampton fired an ace that found the back line to close out the second 25-11 in the Nittany Lions' favor.
Set Three: Penn State 25 Iowa State 23
Candelaria Herrera fired a couple of early kills and Addie Heidemann got her first career service ace to give Iowa State a 7-2 advantage. Iowa State's defense continued to do work, keeping the ball alive and putting up some big blocks, helping ISU move back ahead by five at 15-10. Penn State began working its way back into the match, getting within one at 17-16 after a pair of Cyclone attack errors. PSU tied it at 21-12, but kills from Holthaus and Herrera held PSU at bay. The Nittany Lions got their first lead of the set at 24-23 when Mantz fired long, and Penn State converted on first asking when Adanna Rollins fired off the top of the block at 25-23.
