PONTEVEDRA, Spain – David Carr came up short of the podium Saturday at the U23 World Championships.
Carr started his day with a dominant 12-2 tech fall over Sonny Santiago (PUR) in the 1/8 finals in which it took him less than 15 seconds to secure his first takedown.
Santiago responded with a takedown of his own to tie it but that would be the only scoring for the Puerto Rican. Carr used another takedown and a series of three gut wrenches to take a 10-2 lead into the break. Carr pushed through to the quarterfinals with his third takedown to end the match, 12-2.
The Cyclone senior started fast again in his quarterfinal against Temuri Beruashvili (GEO), using an ankle pick to take a quick 2-0 lead. Beruashvili countered with takedown of his own, but a push out from Carr gave the American a 3-2 advantage into the break.
Carr was the aggressor for much of the second period but surrendered a push out with 14 seconds remaining which tied the score, 3-3. Carr got behind Beruashvili, who held the advantage on criteria, with seconds remaining but was not awarded a takedown as time expired. Carr's corner challenged the call of no takedown but lost, giving Beruashvili a 4-3 victory.
Beruashvili injury defaulted in the semifinals, ending Carr's chance at Bronze and a third world medal.
