AMES, Iowa – Iowa State women's basketball outstanding work on the court has been extended to the classroom, with seven Cyclones being recognized as part of the 2022 Big 12 Women's Basketball Academic All-Big 12 Team, announced on Thursday. This is the second-most honorees the Cyclones have had in program history, only bettered by 2016-17's eight. ISU's seven honorees also ranked second in the Big 12, only behind Oklahoma State's eight.
Iowa State had Lexi Donarski, Maddie Frederick, Aubrey Joens, Ashley Joens, Morgan Kane and Emily Ryan on the First Team, with Izzi Zingaro on the Second Team.
Iowa State has a pair of three-time honorees in Kane and Ashley Joens. Kane, a Kinesiology and Health major, was a First Team honoree for the third-straight season, while Joens, an Elementary Education major, earned her second-straight First Team honor after earning Second Team honors in 2020.
Frederick, an accounting major, earned a second-straight First Team honor. Donarski (Marketing & Management), Aubrey Joens (Elementary Education), Ryan (Kinesiology and Health) and Zingaro (Pre-Business) are all first-time Academic All-Big 12 honorees. For Donarski, she has continued to add to her academic honors one week after being named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District Team.
To earn Academic All-Big 12 honors, First Team members have to maintain a 3.20 or better GPA while the Second Team selections hold a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA. Student-athletes must have participated in 20 percent of their team's scheduled contests.
