LOS ANGELES – Ashley Joens has been named to the John R. Wooden Award National Ballot, announced on Saturday on ESPNW. The national ballot is comprised of 15 players chosen by women's college basketball experts nationally based on their performances so far during the 2021-22 season.
Joens is just the second Cyclone to earn a spot on the National Ballot as a finalist for the Wooden Award Player of the Year, with Bridget Carleton earning a nod in 2019.
The Iowa City, Iowa native leads the Cyclones in scoring and rebounding, averaging 20.4 points and 9.2 rebounds per game. The 2021 Cheryl Miller Award winner, Joens has scored in double figures in all 29 games this season and has recorded 14 double-doubles. Joens has Iowa State ranked No. 8 in the nation, helping the Cyclones to a program record 24 regular season wins.
Voting will take place from March 15th to March 22nd, and voters take into consideration a player's entire season of play, as well as the opening rounds of the NCAA Tournament. The finalists for the 2022 Wooden Award presented by Wendy's will be announced on March 30th.
The National Ballot consists of 15 top players who have proven to their universities that they meet or exceed the qualifications of the Wooden Award. Voters will rank in order 10 of those 15 players when voting opens prior to the NCAA Tournament and will allow voters to take into consideration performance during early round games. The Wooden Award All American Team™ will be announced the week of the "Elite Eight" round of the NCAA Tournament. The winner of the 2022 John R. Wooden Award will be presented by Wendy's following the NCAA Tournament in April.
