AZUSA, California – It was another fast night for the Iowa State track and field teams in Southern California, with the Cyclones posting impressive performances at both the Bryan Clay Invitational and the Mt. SAC Relays.
At the Bryan Clay, the Iowa State men's 800m contingent shone once again while showing off impressive depth. The 5,000m races late Thursday night saw the Cyclone men and women's teams combine for seven personal bests. Meanwhile at Mt. SAC, all three of the Cyclones' steeplechasers left Hilmer Lodge Stadium with personal bests.
Bryan Clay Invitational
Among the collection of strong Iowa State performances across the day, once again it was the men's 800-meter run that shone the brightest on Thursday. The continued depth of the Cyclone middle distance program was shown with a new face, Cebastian Gentil, taking the spotlight. In Section 2 of the 800-meter run, Gentil was paced by Darius Kipyego and dropped a huge personal best of 1:46.97 to win the section and run the fourth-fastest time among the 27 sections of 800s run, the best by a Division I student-athlete.
Gentil's mark is a new personal best by over two seconds, and ranks No. 6 in Iowa State outdoor 800m history. At the time of publication, the effort sees him at No. 5 in NCAA Division I this season. Gentil was one of three Cyclone men to get 800m PRs on Thursday, with Peter Smith (1:49.02) and Joe Schaefer (1:51.52) also getting in on the action.
Iowa State's men's 5,000m contingent had a strong evening as well. On the men's side, the standout performances came in Section 2, with Chad Johnson continuing his renaissance with a massive 23-second personal best of 13:34.86 to finish third. Not far behind was Ezekiel Rop, who took sixth in 13:36.77 and chopped nine seconds off his personal best. Ryan Ford made it a trio of ISU personal bests out of Section 2, taking 10th with a 25-second personal best of 13:42.61. Johnson is now No. 6 in ISU outdoor 5,000m history, with Rop No. 7 on the list now.
Winrose Chesang was the fastest among three Iowa State women to post personal bests on Thursday, dropping nine seconds off her previous best to finish fourth in Section4 in 16:24.30. Dana Feyen was the fastest Cyclone woman of the night out of Section 1, going 16:15.63.
Mt. SAC Relays
All three of Iowa State's steeplechasers in action at the Mt. SAC Relays on Thursday night got personal bests. Leading the way was Janette Schraft, who trimmed a little time off her previous best in Section 5 of the collegiate division with a 10:18.02. Schraft's time is the best in the Big 12 so far this season. Madelynn Hill got a spot in the invitational section and slashed seven seconds off her mark from the Raleigh Relays last month with a 10:34.90, allowing her to move up a spot in ISU's all-time top-10 to No. 6 in program history for the event.
On the men's side, Kelvin Bungei made his ISU debut in the steeplechase on Thursday night. The 2021 NJCAA Division I national champion for Iowa Central in the event, Bungei was able to cut 17 seconds off his personal best and went under nine minutes for the first time in his career with an 8:51.71, taking the win in Section 4 of the collegiate division.
