LONG BEACH, California – Iowa State wrapped up its four days of competition in Southern California at the Beach Invitational on Saturday. The Cyclones did see one of their own pick up an event win at Jack Rose Track, with Jason Gomez continuing his good run of form over the last two weeks.
Gomez's season was already on a high after his 1:47.12 800m at the Sun Angel Classic last weekend saw him earn Big 12 Athlete of the Week honors. He got to work last night at the Bryan Clay Invitational with a huge personal best in the 1,500 meters with a 3:41.69. Saturday, with Tanner Anderson on pacing duties, Gomez took the victory at the Beach Invitational with his time of 1:48.78.
Also doing an 800m/1,500m double over the two days, Nehemia Too followed up his 3:39.27 at the Bryan Clay Invite Friday night with a fifth place finish and new outdoor best of 1:49.61.
Iowa State's women's sprinters and hurdlers continued their impressive seasons. In the women's 400-meter dash, Bria Barnes bounced back from an off-day at the Bryan Clay on Friday with a second-place finish in 54.74, while Zakiyah Amos was the winner of her heat and just missed out on her personal best in 55.08.
In the women's 100-meter hurdles, Kaylyn Hall took advantage of a very generous wind during the invitational section to run an all-conditions personal best of 13.16w. Two heats later and with the winds calmed down a little, Katarina Vlahovic matched her collegiate best in the 100m hurdles to win her heat in 13.47.
