TEMPE, Arizona – Iowa State track and field got strong performances from a variety of event groups and areas on the first day of the Sun Angel Classic at Arizona State.
In the field, Emily March showed why she is the school record holder in the women's discus, but also how she has grown in the event. Her school record of 191-2 (58.27m) she set last season was one of only two throws over 170 feet she had in her career. On Friday at Sun Angel Stadium, March put up a strong collection of consistent throws, with all four of her legal throws going over 185 feet. She saved her best for last, as she launched a throw of 188-2 (57.35m) to finish third on the day. At the time of publication, March's throw is good for sixth in NCAA Division I on the year.
The women's throwers also had a good day in the hammer throw, with all three Cyclones posting personal bests. Leading the way was Antonella Creazzola, who took fifth with a personal best 193-5 (58.97m). The throw moved her up to No. 7 in ISU history in the event. March upped her hammer throw personal best set two weeks ago at Texas State by nearly two feet, finishing eighth at 179-9 (54.79m).
On the track, the Iowa State women impressed in the sprints and hurdles events. In the 100-meter hurdles, the Cyclones' star duo of Kaylyn Hall and Katarina Vlahovic earned second runs tomorrow, with Hall qualifying second in 13.29, moving up to No. 2 in ISU history and Vlahovic going a collegiate-best 13.47, No. 4 in Cyclone history in the event.
Vlahovic followed that up with a personal best 24.59 in the 200-meter dash to finish 10th and enter ISU's all-time top-10 for the event at No. 10. Bria Barnes was right behind Vlahovic in 12th, getting her collegiate-best in 24.72.
